Balance Training/Falls Prevention

Many falls may be prevented.

Simple balance exercises performed daily can make a big difference.

Simple balance exercises performed daily can make a big difference.

Our risk of falling increases as we age and a fall can change a life.

For those ages 65 and above, it is estimated that one in three individuals will have a fall within the year. For those over 80 years of age, one in two individuals is expected to have a fall within the year.  Falls decrease our ability to remain active and independent.  Many falls may be prevented.

What are the risks factors associated with falls?

  • Muscle weakness
  • Decreased balance
  • Loss of mobility
  • Decreased vision
  • Low blood pressure
  • Use of medication
  • Environmental hazards: rugs, cords, slippery floors, uneven ground

What can be done to prevent falls?

A sedentary lifestyle contributes to deconditioning.   This increases your risk of falling.  Your physical therapist at Olympic Sports & Spine Rehabilitation can safely assist you in maintaining your physical activity level in order to decrease your risk of falling.  After completing a full history and examination, your therapist will develop an individualized program of exercises with emphasis on flexibility, balance, strengthening and conditioning.  A home program will be designed for you as well. With a bit of training you will find that you have more mobility, are steadier on your feet and have a decreased fear of falling.

It is our goal to minimize your risk of falling.  But because all falls are not preventable, we will also instruct you in proper body mechanics to minimize injury should you have a fall.
